Year 6 - A Gift of Summer Reading

At Esher High we believe that literacy is particularly important, so we are encouraging all year groups to read during the summer holidays.

For our Year 6 students we have created a special video recording of the novel Coraline by Neil Gaiman for you to watch and read.  Each chapter is read by a member of staff who Year 6 will get to know during their first year at Esher High School.  For example, Chapter 1 is read by Mr Boddington and Chapter 2 is read by their Head of Year, Mr Burton.  A link to each chapter can be found below.  Students may also wish to read the novel themselves, so a copy of the novel can also be found below.

Chapter 1 - Mr Boddington

Chapter 2 - Mr Burton

Chapter 3 - Miss Copp

Chapter 4 - Miss Joyes

Chapter 5 - Mrs Taylor

Chapter 6 - Mrs Duncombe

Chapter 7 - Mr Emery

Chapter 8 - Mrs Porphyrios

Chapter 9 - Mr May

Chapter 10 - Miss Heugh

Chapter 11 - Miss Courtois

Chapter 12 - Miss Shrubb

Chapter 13 - Mrs Quigley

Once your child has read the novel Coraline, we suggest they complete an activity.  This could be to write a book review or a one page synopsis of the story with pictures of the characters. They should either take a picture of their work or type their work, then email it to: ebosley@esherhigh.surrey.sch.uk.  1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes will be awarded for effort made.  Submissions should be made by 5pm on Friday 10 September 2021.  Your child may enter the competition more than once and can complete the tasks on the novel Coraline or any other novel of their choice.

We will have initiatives throughout the 2021/22 academic year to help promote literacy.  We find literacy support at home to be invaluable in raising pupils’ attainment levels.  We will be providing you with tips on how to support your child at home through our regular Parent Bulletin starting in September 2021.

Thank you for your support.  We look forward to welcoming your child to Esher High in September.
