At Esher High School we are committed to developing independent learners who are able to manage their own time, approach problem solving with a Growth Mindset and take full ownership of their academic progress. As such, we aim to set tasks that are challenging, engaging and relevant.
Research has taught us that home work;
- improves students’ thinking and memory
- helps students develop positive study skills and habits that will serve them well throughout life
- teaches students to work independently and manage their time
- teaches students to take responsibility for their own learning
- allows students to review and practise what has been covered in class
- helps students develop their research skills through use of libraries and computer websites to find information
- allows students to extend learning by applying skills to new situations
HOME WORK TASKS
It is an expectation that home work will be consistently set and completed, provide appropriate challenge and provide feedback that allows reflection on tasks completed. As a result, specific tasks set will vary between departments and teachers.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Years 7 - 9
In years 7, 8 and 9 students will be given tasks which will take 30 to 45 minutes per subject, but there may be extended projects which will be spread over a longer period of time. These extended projects are ideal preparation for the examination work at Key Stage 4.
Years 10 - 11
GCSE coursework and home work is a vital part of the Key Stage 4 curriculum. Home Work patterns may need to be more flexible to allow for extended pieces of work. Students must ensure that they comply with deadlines and organise their time carefully. There is an expectation that Key Stage 4 students should undertake approximately 2 - 3 hours of study each evening.
WHEN WILL HOME WORK BE SET?
All departments will set home work throughout the two week timetable cycle. English, Maths and Science will set tasks once a week, whilst other subject areas will set tasks once every fortnight. There will be no specific day for departments to set home work, but it will be curriculum driven.
Deadlines for home learning will depend on the nature of the tasks set. However, students will usually be given at least 1 weeks’ notice to complete home learning.
RECORDING HOME WORK
Our expectation is that all students record home work tasks within their planners. This should be checked by parents and the Form Tutor on a weekly basis.
Additional support will be given by each member of staff via Show My Homework, allowing students to view tasks online via a desktop, or hand held device using the free App. If students misplace their planner, they can still access the Show My Homework calendar (with or without their password) and see a copy of the task, along with supporting information to help complete the task. Show My Homework gives parents/guardians the opportunity to see what is being set and when it is due, so that you can support your son/daughter in their learning.
Show My Homework is a simple online homework calendar showing homework information, deadlines and attachments for students and parents alike. It can translate into 50+ languages facilitating accessibility and it also improves communication through school announcements.
