Homework

As part of the high value we place on academic process, we constantly strive to support our students in every way possible to realise their full academic potential. One of the ways in which we do this is through homework.

At Esher High School we are committed to developing independent learners who are able to manage their own time, approach problem-solving with a Growth Mindset and take full ownership of their academic progress. As such, we aim to set tasks that are challenging, engaging and relevant.

Research has taught us that homework;

  • improves students’ thinking and memory
  • helps students develop positive study skills and habits that will serve them well throughout life
  • teaches students to work independently and manage their time
  • teaches students to take responsibility for their own learning
  • allows students to review and practise what has been covered in class
  • helps students develop their research skills through use of libraries and computer websites to find information
  • allows students to extend learning by applying skills to new situations

Homework Tasks

It is an expectation that homework will be consistently set and completed, provide appropriate challenge and provide feedback that allows reflection on tasks completed. As a result, specific tasks set will vary between departments and teachers.

What to Expect

Years 7 - 9

In Years 7, 8 and 9 students will be given tasks which will take 30 to 45 minutes per subject, but there may be extended projects which will be spread over a longer period of time.  These extended projects are ideal preparation for the examination work at Key Stage 4.

Years 10 - 11

GCSE coursework and homework is a vital part of the Key Stage 4 curriculum.  Homework patterns may need to be more flexible to allow for extended pieces of work.  Students must ensure that they comply with deadlines and organise their time carefully.  There is an expectation that Key Stage 4 students should undertake approximately 2 - 3 hours of study each evening.

When will Homework be set?

All departments will set homework throughout the two-week timetable cycle. English, Maths and Science will set tasks once a week, whilst other subject areas will set tasks once every fortnight. There will be no specific day for departments to set homework, but it will be curriculum driven.

Deadlines for home learning will depend on the nature of the tasks set. However, students will usually be given at least 1 weeks’ notice to complete home learning.

Recording Homework

Our expectation is that all students record homework tasks within their planners. This should be checked by parents and the Form Tutor on a weekly basis.

Staff will set reminders of homework for students on EduLink One. This is an app that shows homework set for students, their timetable, achievements, behaviour, attendance and clubs. Students also have access to Microsoft Teams and Office 365. The reminders set on EduLink One may require submission of the homework in Teams. Student log in details for both EduLink One and Microsoft Teams/Office are the same as the username/email and password they use in school.

You can login to EduLink One here.  If you have lost or forgotten your login details you can request this by emailing office@esherhigh.surrey.sch.uk
