Yr 10 Student Rebecca Van Der Hagen receives accolade from Brunel University

At a recent Urban Scholars day at Brunel University, Year 10 student Rebecca Van Der Hagen gave a detailed and dynamic presentation about introducing a school radio station at Esher High School.  Rebecca identified lack of communication as an area of school life she wanted to address saying  "busy schedules and a lesson filled day mean that things can get forgotten".

Rebecca felt a radio station would enable students to take responsibility for one method of communication within schools, which would in turn give them a feeling of ownership and pride in their school. Live performances could feature on the station alongside daily updates. The audience really appreciated the carefully considered and excellently delivered presentation to the extent that Linda McPhee, who runs the Urban Scholars Saturday program at Brunel, sent an e mail to the school to praise Rebecca’s mature and polished presentation.

The Urban Scholars is a weekend programme run by Brunel University which aims to create challenging experiences for able and potentially able students who would benefit from additional opportunities to enhance their academic performance, self-confidence, critical thinking, team work and presentational skills.
