Year 7's get drumming in African Dance and Drumming Workshop

Last week, 30 enthusiastic year 7 students were rewarded for their extra-curricular involvement with an African Dance and Drumming workshop. A team of specialist performers came in to teach the students a traditional dance, giving a new insight into a traditional African culture. Students were then taught various rhythms on African drums and a traditional song; this links to a unit on African music studied in year 8.

At the end of the workshop the students showed their work to other year 7 classes and gave an exceptional performance considering the short time they had spent on the dance and drumming. All the students were very positive about the session and expressed their enjoyment and thanks at being involved.

Year 7 Student, Evie Donaldson said “It was fun and we got to learn a lot about African culture and dancing.”

“It was great seeing the students moving out of their comfort zones to try something completely new. All the students worked really hard and did the school proud” said Mrs L O’Neil, Teacher of Music.
