EHS Staff and Parents cycle to Paris and back in a weekend for Charity

Every year, Chris Horrod teacher at Esher Church of England High School has organised challenges to support schools in Zambia which the School has visited since 2009.

This year, the challenge to staff and parents from BBT cycle club based in Molesey was to ride from Esher to Paris in less than 24 hours and then return the following morning.  A group of 7, including Head teacher Mike Boddington set off at 17.00 on Friday 16th June to cycle to Newhaven.  After a four hour ferry crossing, they started cycling again in from Dieppe. Using minor roads they crossed the French countryside to the outskirts of Paris where the traffic began to get very busy. They negotiated the massive cobbled roundabout around the Arc de Triomphe safely and descended towards the Seine and Eifel Tower. They made their target time having completed the cycle in 22 hours and having covered 175 miles cycling.

An early night after showering and dinner was followed by a 06.00 alarm call on Sunday morning to begin the return journey. Tired legs were forced back into action and Dieppe was reached by 16.30 ready for the ferry back to Newhaven. The last leg of the journey started at 21.00 with the exhausted group arrived back at Esher High at 1.00am on Monday morning.

Chris was thrilled with the achievement “ we were delighted to have cycled so far, and to have completed it with time to spare, all in aid of such a great community in Zambia.”

The fundraising from the ride has added £1200 to the other fundraising projects to support 3 schools in Zambia.  We will be providing laptops, clothing, stationery and sporting equipment when we visit, arriving on the 14th July this year. . The group of 46 students and staff  will also be painting the interior and exterior of two schools.  To support the Zambia fundraising you can go to https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Esherhigh
